THE BOY WHO WON’T EAT EGGS

having known
since pushing two

that we die
never cared

when he couldn’t reach
the faucets

without a chair
and still tries

to conserve
his entire future

like something one hand
can hold, or slip

into his pocket,
weighty, cool

its shell
